Segment
A segment is an audience/group that you can then use to customize your website for that audience. A segment is a marketing-driven group that can define criteria based on a data point. Segments can be complex or simple. Segments are resolved dynamically based on the inputs of the user. A single request/webpage/asset may convert to many segments or none.
What is a Segment?
A segment is built on top of segment definitions. Earlier we learnt that a data point might be the 50 states in America. A segment is a specific resolution. A segment could be New York, which would be US-State = NY for example. While the data point only has 1 definition, we would create 51 segments, one for each state and the District of Columbia. A segment is dynamic. We might define a segment as the US North East States, in this case, the US-State could be any of NY/MA/PA/NJ etc. We might create 6 segments for these types of categories. We can also alter the rules of the segment at runtime. So, while today the North East could include NY, maybe 2 weeks later we remove NY and create a unique segment just for New York state.
